What We Do

Homeownership

Who are our homeowners?

Interested in building and buying your own home? Do you have the commitment necessary to maintain your home? Are you interested in forming community with your new neighbors?

Habitat for Humanity Abilene builds homes in partnership with qualifying low-income partner families. We sell all of our homes at a subsidized price, and most of them are financed with a zero percent interest mortgage from Habitat. Families work alongside volunteers to construct their own home and the homes of other Habitat families. Additionally, families are prepared for successful homeownership through homeowner education and budgeting courses.

Do you qualify?

Abilene Habitat is seeking families who demonstrate a need for housing, the ability to pay a mortgage, and a willingness to partner.

Your family must meet the most recent income guidelines:

Household Size Minimum Income Maximum Income
1 $15,400 $41,000
2 $17,600 $46,850
3 $19,800 $52,700
4 $21,950 $58,550
5 $23,750 $63,350
6 $25,500 $67,950
7 $27,250 $72,650
8 $29,000 $77,300

Impacts of Homeownership

Compared to children of renters of the same age, income, race, etc., the children of homeowners:

  • Are 25 percent more likely to graduate from high school
  • 116 percent more likely to graduate from college
  • 59 percent more likely to own their own home
  • Achieve 9 percent higher math scores
  • Achieve 7 percent higher reading scores.

Overall, homeownership provides stability for children. They stay in the same schools and parents invest more time in developing positive relationships with neighbors and the community.*

“The opportunity to receive a home from Habitat for Humanity has been a life-changing event. It started out as a way to get a home for my girls and me, as well as a chance to help myself. If has turned into an incredible learning experience, an opportunity to make new friends, and a chance to learn skills of independence and cooperation. Habitat has allowed me to be involved in an organization that makes me excited about being able to help others while helping myself.” - Angela
